Thanks
To those of you who have sent us bits of information, be assured they have been read and deleted as asked
We do have one question on one submission; it was a little "rough" on a person, had to do with Real Estate and other things but did not say "do not publish" It has been languishing in the "in" bin until we verified you wanted to publish that comment
Thanks again for those submissions, they won't be "instant" comments but it is building our understanding of people who post on these boards
Now we have a question: W have visited the DR several times, the North Coast once.
All of this Government destruction going on in PP, trying to figure the location.
If we were driving on the Malcolm in PP toward Sosua and DID NOT turn right toward the main street in town, would Long Beach be that row of small indoor/outdoor restaurants and bars on the right side of road?
As many of you have said; for the Government to just bulldoze homes and businesses is unbelievable, combined with the restrictive recent crackdowns on liquor and curfews, what is going on?

I was in POP today and drove through the area.
First, to answer your question, if you are traveling east toward Sosua on the Malecon (or Malcolm if you prefer-- are you trying to stir up the spelling police too?), stay on the oceanfront drive until you must turn right at Long Beach Park...as I believe you said, instead of taking the first right toward the Autopista, you jog around the circle (bronze figure in the middle)and continue on the Malecon to Long Beach. Clear as mud?
The bulldozed businesses are around the corner, not directly across from the ocean, but across from Long Beach Park. This section of the road joins the one from the first turn you passed by and brings you to the main traffic circle and hwy back to Sosua.
Today, other businesses still standing were preparing to move. I saw people moving a freezer from one place and tearing down anything worth saving from some others. So it would appear they expect to be razed next.
btw, I saw another bulldozing that happened just days before Hippolito was about to cede power; this one between Sosua and Cabarete. Similar scenario... squatters without land titles were finally forced to leave. I don't know the full story (does anyone?) but word had it that the landowners wanted use of the land and someone lost patience... perhaps involving a favor from the outgoing govt, or govt military bigwigs, but that's just hearsay.
I was driving to Cabarete with a carload of gals at the time-- on our way to Dori's for Thai food.We drove right through the action... one in my car said with great confidence that it was a movie set for a film being shot in the area. She knew one of the extras. It looked like a futuristic war zone, and luckily I thought it was a film set, because it would have been beyond frightening otherwise. We were waved through, by some guys with guns in fatigues. I told her I'd never seen such a realistic looking film set. Later, we discovered one problem with her film set theory... it was a pirate film. Not many autos or bulldozers in that seascape.
AS to the bigger scenario with the liquor crackdown, word on the street here seems to be: no one really knows what's going on or what might be the underlying motive, if there is one. Some with some DR living experience are saying, 'nothing to do but wait and see'. Before the liquor curfew, they had begun to do something I'd not seen before... police were out on the autopista at midnight, near the playero, checking cars. Looking for guns, it seemed. I went through a red light, so was stopped; I had two other friends in my car. The police asked if I knew I went through a red light. I said, "Of course... everyone goes through red lights here at this time of night." This is a fallout from the low electicity days, when the traffic light wasn't working anyway. It worked for them.
Leonel is visiting POP this weekend. Maybe he's expecting to see a cleaned up Malecon... the sand arrived on time, so maybe it was also time to get rid of the squatters? That is typical here... Two Easters in a row I saw the autopista receive a facelift between POP and Cabarete, it lasted only a few weeks before the potholes were back, but it looked lovely, a smooth drive, for any Presidents who happened to be driving by during Semana Santa.
